PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for
hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a patient's own
blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the patient's
scalp. Platelets contain healing growth factors. Those growth
factors are like signal callers that give instructions to your
tissue to regenerate and multiply. With PRP for hair, your growth
factors and stem cells work together to reverse the miniaturization
of the hair follicle and jumping starting dormant hair back into
growth stage. PRP is best used for patients with androgenic
alopecia, which is a genetically determined type of hair thinning
that typically occurs along the top of the head.
In general, PRP is a safe treatment. The
side effects of PRP injections are very limited, because the
injections are created from your own blood, your body will not
reject or react negatively to them.
PRP injections involves collection of your
own blood. Then blood is processed to separate out the platelet
rich plasma (PRP) portion. These activated platelets are then
injected directly into the point of care. This releases growth
factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative
cells your body produces.
Treatment will vary based on your need.
Initially, your provider may recommend 2-3 treatments spaced 1
month apart. After the initial treatments, many physicians
suggest maintenance treatments 2-3 times per year.
PRP is not a cure for baldness. The
genetic medical problem will always remain. However, there is
great evidence that regular treatments can significantly slow
down the effects of Androgenetic Alopecia and even works to
increase hair density.
